Concerning Harry Potter

A STATEMENT FROM ENCHANTICON

EnchantiCon is an event celebrating the experience of fandom. It is not now nor ever has been endorsed or sanctioned by J.K. Rowling or Warner Brothers. In fact, we staunchly oppose the fear and hatred that J.K. Rowling has been spreading about members of the trans and non-binary communities in recent years.  Learn more

Our programming celebrates the literature we all love, both joyfully and critically, and we’ve never shied away from discussing complex topics. It is our hope that people see EnchantiCon as a place where they can explore and express themselves. We strive to create an environment where this can happen freely, whether that requires us to remove an attendee, create gender neutral restrooms in venues that don’t provide them, or further distance ourselves from an author whose platitudes endanger people we care about.

Specifically at the request of our trans and non-binary community members, a small portion of EnchantiCon programming still discusses and engages in Harry Potter. After we ended LeakyCon, we received significant feedback from these community members feeling that their last safe space to discuss the series would be disappearing, especially as safe online spaces have disappeared in order to reduce the online footprint (and power) of the author. For many trans fans who attended LeakyCon and plan to attend EnchantiCon, the process of continuing to discuss Harry Potter is transformational; it includes mourning, catharsis, and reclamation of our own stories.

We aim to give trans and nonbinary people who still have feelings about Harry Potter a safe space to talk about them. While we welcome criticism of us and our event, we take the protection of our panelists and staff very seriously and will not tolerate any harmful comments regarding or towards them.

Our shared love of stories brought us together, and this community is about something much bigger than hero worshipping one flawed person. We will continue to highlight the fan creations that inspire us. We will strive to uplift marginalized voices more than ever before. We will focus on the joy that comes from our shared interests, passions, and experiences, and we will not lend credence to ignorance.
